IES now offers Tape Discovery service to unlock the data contained on backup tapes, making individual files and e-mail easily accessible.  The technology allows us to index data directly on the offline tapes, so you can search for relevant information.  We then restore only the files and e-mail that you need – a method which offers tremendous time- and cost-savings over the traditional approach, in which the entire tape contents are restored and indexed before searching and extraction can commence.

Most commonly-used backup formats, including ArcServ, NetBackup and Backup Exec are supported, and the tool can provide full text and metadata indexing of hundreds of unstructured file formats.  Additionally, Tape Discovery supports term, Boolean, and pattern searching, and features dynamic de-duplication, which enables queries to return only unique files.

IES' Magnetic media discovery service:

• Indexes backup media at the speed of the tape drive.

• Indexes unstructured files and email to allow for comprehensive search results using Boolean, phrase, fuzzy, and proximity searching.

• Is capable of managing unordered media, automatically sorting and cataloging unmarked and out-of-order archives.

• Can never result in data spoliation. Data is indexed directly from the magnetic media which is never modified. All file system metadata, like access and modified dates/times, are kept intact. As a matter of procedure, all magnetic media is rendered read-only if possible before processing.

• Provides extensive deduplication capabilities, returning only unique files and email files when searching.

• Extracts files and individual emails from magnetic media without the use of the backup software and without the need to replicate the original environment.
